Vehicular Traffic Now Permanently Blocked From Falmouth Water Square

April 30, 2011 in Falmouth News by Brian Elliott

The final stage of the Water Square pedestrianization in Falmouth Jamaica started yesterday and continued today with the erection of vehicular barriers at all entrances to the Square that permanently block vehicular traffic from entering the Square. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ This is a welcome move and I was wondering when it would happen. Since the square was blocked with temporary barriers, they were moved as expected, by the many rebellious souls among us. The result… several vehicles parked in the square and some driving as if they do not care for pedestrians. At times, the square was full with vehicles. I also

Stop Urinating On The Streets of Falmouth, Jamaica

April 29, 2011 in Environment by Brian Elliott

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ There are two unofficial public bathrooms on Falmouth,  Officer’s Alley and Upper Parade Street (Spicy Nice Lane). These are not the flush toilet and hand washing facility at the official public sanitary convenience, but walls and streets on which people (both men and women) urinate. It has been a habit of many of us Jamaicans to take a piss at any convenient place (especially in the rural areas). This is partially due to the fact public sanitary conveniences are generally lacking, but mostly due to our indiscipline and lack of respect for our environment. It was an acceptable practice

April 28, 2011 in Things To Do by Brian Elliott

Man Power Health Food Store and Vegetarian Restaurant I had been a vegetarian for 14 years of my life and although I now consume meat (which leaves me feeling guilty after each meal), my heart is vegan so I try to balance the meat with vegetarian meals. If you are in Falmouth, whether a vegetarian or not, you will want to try Man Power Health Food Store and Vegetarian Restaurant. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ This is undoubtedly my favorite restaurant in Falmouth, although I don’t eat here enough. The food is high fibre, just what the doctor ordered for prevention of almost all

April 18, 2011 in Things To Do by Brian Elliott

Up to a little over a year ago, Club Nazz Night Club occupied the second floor of the 4 level Club Nazz Restaurant and was the hottest night club in Western Jamaica. Patrons came from all over to Club Nazz on Wednesdays (yes Wednesdays) to Club Nazz Karaoke Night Reloaded. The night started with Karaoke as early as 8 o’clock and then transforming into a Dancehall night sometime after midnight. Harbour Café and Bar With the transformation of Falmouth into a tourist destination comes new things to do in Falmouth, new attractions to attract tourist dollars that will make the town of Falmouth a memorable place for visitors. Many of the Falmouth attractions are large established businesses, but I would like to introduce a new, small business called the Harbour Café and Bar, located in the Albert George Shopping Center. The café has been open for less than a month. It is a small space, but dining is provided in the large space outside the cafe in the Albert George

Police In Falmouth Evict Street Vendors

April 13, 2011 in Falmouth News by Brian Elliott

In the past few days, there has been a police squad in Falmouth whose mandate is to clean up the town of illegal taxis and street vendors. Yesterday there were 10 wreckers in town seizing anything that looked like an illegal taxi. As a result many owners went home without their vehicles and many commuters had to suffer long waiting hours or walk to their destination. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The pressure continued today and I felt sorry for a vendor who has been selling on the Market Street/Duke Street corner for the last few years, when I saw his cart being pushed

Falmouth Police In All Out War Against Illegal Taxis

April 11, 2011 in Security by Brian Elliott

The Falmouth police have declared an all out war on robots (illegal taxis). the police has been relentless over the past few weeks, obviously determined, once and for all, to rid the town of the illegal taxis. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Previously, it was the transport authority that taxi drivers had to fear as the police had more or less left the seizure of vehicles to the transport authority. To avoid being caught, the illegal drivers had to only stay at home and avoid traveling on the days the transport authority is in town. The cellphone alerted all drivers that ‘transport de ’bout’

Work To Continue This Month On The New Falmouth Police Station

April 8, 2011 in Development by Brian Elliott

The prime Minister of Jamaica, the Honorable Bruce Golding announced two weeks week that work was to commence or more appropriately, continue this month on the new Falmouth Police Station. The new station is just across the road from the temporary station on Rodney Street. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The current police station is really old and dilapidated and should be renovated and added to any historic tour of Falmouth. The buildings were rotting, roof, walls and flooring, making it dangerous for police to work. The cells were old and inhumane so something had to be done. Falmouth prisoners had to be taken

Update – Helitours Builds Helipad in Falmouth

April 8, 2011 in Falmouth News by Brian Elliott

In the previous article, “The Price of Development – Have Helicopters Taken Over The Falmouth Basketball Court?”, I rued the fact that helicopters were landing on the basketball court, preventing the local Falmouth basketballer team from using their court, which is actually owned by the Trelawny Parish Council. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________   Island Hoppers Helicopter Tours Ltd is based in Ocho Rios and provides helicopter tours of the island for sightseeing, business and anyone needing to move quickly from one location in Jamaica to the other. This will be an attractive addition to Falmouth’s attractions. Since then I have made some queries
