Photos of The Bike Accident In Salt Marsh On The Internet

June 24, 2011 in Falmouth News by Brian Elliott

It was a regular, largely uneventful week in Falmouth, the highlight of which was a terrible accident in Salt Marsh on Wednesday that took the lives of two young bike riders. They were both from Spot Valley in St. James. They reportedly tried to overtake a truck, got into difficulty and were unfortunately overran by a car. What I find appalling is the misuse of the information age. Nowadays almost everyone now has a camera-phone or a camera. That does not mean graphic photos and videos of accidents like these should be parading on Facebook, YouTube and other sites on

Injury Keeps Falmouth Born National Under 17 Goalkeeper Out Of World Cup

June 21, 2011 in Football by Brian Elliott

The Under 17 World Cup is well underway in Mexico and Jamaica has lost their first 2 of 3 group matches, the first 1-0 against Japan and the second a few hours ago, going down 2-1 in a very gutsy performance against football power Argentina and the goal scored by young Barnes in that match created history as the first by Jamaica in a Under 17 World Cup. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ That aside, one man missing from the Jamaican lineup was goalkeeper Odean Clarke who is from Falmouth. He is the son of Lance Clarke who occasionally sells ackee,  fish and festival

Hague Community Being Punished By New Developments In And Around Falmouth

June 13, 2011 in Community by Brian Elliott

The rapid developments in Trelawny over the last few years has brought a lot of positive changes and optimism in the parish and a sense that the long neglected parish is now finally getting its due…a huge piece of the ‘tourism pie.’ Apart from tourist interests, many other people have seized the opportunity to capitalize on the ‘new Trelawny’ including the land developers. As stated in a previous article, there are several new housing schemes including Florence Hall Village and Stonebrook near the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium and Holland Estates in Martha Brae. One community that is not currently benefiting from

What Became of The Proposed Martha Brae Theme Park?

June 8, 2011 in Development by Brian Elliott

This is our fourth article on the future boom town of Martha Brae, near Falmouth in Trelawny, Jamaica. In my previous feature on Martha Brae entitled Why Martha Brae Will Be The Boom Town Of The Future In Trelawny, I stated several reasons why Martha Brae will be the place to be in the short to medium term. Further research has brought me to a grand proposed project called the Martha Brae Theme Park. The Environmental Impact Assessment for the project by Eric Morley was done way back in 2006. The project itself is

Time For Trelawny To Highlight Its Son Hugh Lawson Shearer, Former Prime Minister of Jamaica?

June 7, 2011 in Falmouth People by Brian Elliott

I was shooting some photos for a feature on Martha Brae last Labour Day and I came across the house in which Jamaica’s third Prime Minister was born and grew up in until he won a parish scholarship and left for Kingston. Hugh Lawson Shearer was born and raised in Martha Brae, 1.5 miles from Falmouth, yet many residents do not talk about it or make it known. A lot of that is due to Shearer’s perceived neglect of Falmouth and some due to our lack of respect for history. I bet most Trelawny residents do not know Shearer’s house.

Falmouth Cruise Ship Port Inspires Falmouth, Cornwall, England

June 6, 2011 in Falmouth News by Brian Elliott

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Cruise Ship Port development here in Falmouth Jamaica has surprisingly inspired a town in England. That town is Falmouth, Cornwall, the very town after which Falmouth Jamaica was named. When Governor Trelawny created Trelawny (from St. James)  in 1770, he named the parish after himself and the capital after Falmouth, Cornwall, England where he was from. A recent visit to Falmouth, Cornwall from William Tatham, vice president of cruise shipping and marina operations for the Port Authority of Jamaica (who helped oversee the development of the cruise ship pier in Falmouth Jamaica) saw him meeting with business leaders

Why Martha Brae Will Be The Boom Town Of The Future In Trelawny

June 3, 2011 in Community by Brian Elliott

Martha Brae , back in 1770 became the first capital of the new parish of Trelawny, after St. James was divided to provide a new parish. St. James was split after many Trelawny landowners complained of the distance they had to travel to Montego Bay to conduct business. Martha Brae is an inland community situated 1.5 miles from Falmouth and the sea. Its famous river now has a world renowned attraction, ‘Rafting on the Martha Brae.’ Back in the 18th century, goods were sent down the river to the sea to be loaded on ships. The capital was moved to
