A Case of Obeah In Falmouth Jamaica?
May 16, 2011 in Falmouth News by Brian Elliott
There was drama in Falmouth this morning as an egg in a plastic bag (a suspected case of Jamaican obeah or witchcraft) outside the Sinclairs Bargain Center caught the interest of passersby.

The egg had something written on it in red ink, and the paper had the words ‘buiry’ written twice (see the picture below). Speculation is that the word ‘bury’ was the intention, but it was misspelled. Yet another theory which seemed more likely, is that it is referring to a local traffic policeman Everyone was afraid to go close to the package and it was humorous to see people trying to get a look from a distance.
Obeah is a form of witchcraft practiced in Jamaica which is reportedly used to either harm others, protect oneself, increase prosperity or get people to do your will. It is against the law, so it is practiced behind the scenes. It is the first time I have seen such a blatant, open display.
In the end, it was kicked in the middle of the road and lost its appeal to passersby. It left everyone wondering who was the target.
