Petty Thieves Steal Wooden Palm Tree Braces In Water Square

May 2, 2011 in Falmouth News by Brian Elliott

As soon as I had written an article glorifying the low crime rate in Falmouth, I was hit with an embarrassing news. The braces (support) for the palm trees planted in Water Square were stolen.

One of the rare sets of braces left on the palm trees in Water Square (right)

These braces were used to keep the palm trees firmly in place until the roots grew and could support the weight of the tree on its own. The braces were made of wood, which explains the theft.

Now which low-life, selfish nobody could have done this, and how could they do it without arousing suspicion? There are too many people who would do this to even consider a suspect. This is just the act of  greedy individual (s).

I only hope the person gets caught (I know this is highly unlikely) so we can all know who actually committed such an act. In the meantime, the trees are not very stable as there are no braces. What if there is an unusually strong wind? The palm trees could come crashing down.

Some Jamaicans are such a selfish, ‘me’ oriented people, they make me sick. We are being provided with an excellent facility, yet petty thieves are trying to hold it back. Everything that someone builds, we try to break it down. These destroyers are in the minority, yet they give so much problem, we all get stereo-typed as wrongdoers.

We have been gifted an excellent facility. Our Water Square has been converted into a people friendly, pedestrianized park that is beautiful and relaxing Couldn’t the criminals at least spare this area? The Danish workers at Pihl, the company contracted to build the port and who are also responsible for Water Square’s reconstruction, must be wondering what kind of unconscionable animals we are.
