Olympian Pablo McNeil, Usain Bolt’s First Coach Is Dead

Pablo McNeil, the first coach of phenomenal sprinter Usain Bolt, has died at the age of 71. ‘Pablo Mac’ as he is locally known, had long suffered from hypertension. McNeil, himself a former Olympian, is credited for seeing the potential in Usain and encouraging him to make the transition from his then favorite game, cricket to Track and Field. It was not an easy transition for Bolt, as Pablo McNeil reportedly had to coerce Bolt to train in the early year. Congratulations to our parish’s most famous son, Usain Bolt on the release of his new book entitled: Usain Bolt: My Story: 9.58: Being the World’s Fastest Man I ran through a copy today and was surprised at how much respect he had for my former primary school teacher Lorna Thorpe, who taught him at William Knibb. She is featured in one of his chapters.
